Let us speak for a moment about recent news out of the christian world. The Lutheran church, the original protestants, have decided that their gay clergy should now also be allowed to have committed relationships like their heterosexual counterparts. I commend them on their choice to do so, I applaud them in fact. Many are up in arms about it here. I dont understand why...
They keep saying it is an abomination before god. Well, lets look into this, shall we...
The word abomination is mentioned in only 8 different verses of the current accepted version of the bible NIV, or 10 in the KJV. In the NIV it refers to a profecy of Daniel about the Abomination that causes desolation. Now, this passage makes no real sense in the current bible because it is not referring to anything still in the bible. Fact is, that refers to a second book of daniel that was omitted from the bible because it speaks of daniels use of the sacred markers.
In the KJV it refers to certain birds, such as eagles, as abominations and once in Leviticus, which we will discuss soon.
Never once does the word abomination appear in reference to homosexuality in the bible.
Passages that refer to homosexuality refer to god creating homosexuality as a punishment for worshiping "false gods" in a fit of jealous rage.
Most christians cling to Leviticus 18:22, thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind, it is an abomination. Anywhere else in the passages directly before this one and directly after, when referring to a sexual act, it specifies it with the word carnally (KJV) or sexually (NIV). It is specifically omitted from 18:22, but in proverbs 6 it lists the 7 abominations, they are:
A proud look
a LYING tounge
Hands that shed innocent blood
A heart that deviseth wicked imaginations
feet that be swift in running to mischief
a false witness who speaks lies
he that soweth discord among brethren
no mention of homosexuality, but twice a mention of lies. the NIV verse of Leviticus 18:22 is:
Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman, that is detestable.
again, mentions lies, but doesn't specify sexually like it would in the prior and proceeding passages. So tell me folks, where does it say in the bible any thing about homosexuality being an abomination?

Actually, the biblicl term for sex is "know" as used in the KJV; which any good Lutheran (LCMS or ELCA)uses.
ReplyDeleteAs a church counsil member and Synod Rep., of Saint John the Baptist Evangelical Luthern Church in Hoboken, NJ... I helped pass the Human Sexuality Bill this past June.
As for the homosexuality stuff, Christians need to realize ONE basic thing. Christianity (New Testament) is a religion of Faith (Saved by Word, Grace and Faith alone). Judaism (Old Testament) is a religion of laws. What ever laws Jews followed before are wiped away with Christ Jesus. The same idiots that refer to Leviticus never seem to get that eating shrimp is just a horrid a sin. Hermeneutics MUST be applied here. When a man lies with a man ... is it anything like when a man lies with a woman? Nope!
A similiar law can be found in the Qu`ran. Muslim men are allowed up to four wives; provided he loves them equally. Can any man love four woman equally?
Religious canon is for any devout to read; yet it is dangerous to interpret for themselves. Hence, I go to a very conservitive Lutheran church (where I am an open lesbian, damn skippy tattooed and frequently foul-mouthed). And welcomed with open arms by a loving congregation! I am also Acolyte, Eucharistic Minister and pre-seminary.
Ain't God cool?
